Dr. Virginia Sisiopiku Named ITE Fellow

In September 2014, Dr. Virginia P. Sisiopiku was named a Fellow of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), an honor bestowed on the top transportation engineering professionals in the country. She is the first ever female ITE member in the State of Alabama holding this special professional distinction. 

Dr. Virginia P. Sisiopiku is an Associate Professor of Transportation Engineer in the UAB Department of UAB Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering since 2002 and the Director of the Transportation Program at UAB. Since 2012, she serves as the UAB Representative to STRIDE.

She has over 20 years of expertise in traffic operations and safety, simulation modeling, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and sustainable transportation options and has dedicated her career to the advancement of knowledge and practice in the field of transportation engineering. To date, her research work has produced 160 referred technical papers and book chapters and has been featured on TV and other mass media on numerous occasions. For her contributions to research and education, Dr. Sisiopiku been recognized by many organizations including the Institute of Transportation Engineers, the Federal Highway Administration, the Illinois Association of Highway Engineers, IEEE, and the Women's Transportation Seminar.

Dr. Sisiopiku is also a dedicated mentor and educator who served as a faculty adviser of over 55 Master and Doctoral students in transportation engineering. Throughout her career, she also mentored high school students, undergraduate students, junior faculty members and post-doctoral fellows. In recognition of her performance as a mentor and an educator, Dr. Sisiopiku received the 2010 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Mentorship and the 2007 President’s Excellence in Teaching Award.

Dr. Sisiopiku joined ITE in 1989 as a student member and moved up the membership ranks through the years. She served the national, regional, and Alabama section of ITE in various capacities including serving as Associate Editor of the Journal of Transportation of the ITE and appointed to the Technical Advisory Committee of ITE/Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to reduce childhood obesity. She currently serves as the State of Alabama Representative to the Southern District ITE (SDITE) Education Fund Committee and as faculty advisor for the UAB ITE Student Chapter which she founded in 2002.

Dr. Sisiopiku’s selection as a Fellow of ITE recognizes her substantial contribution to the transportation engineering profession.  Congratulations to Dr. Sisiopiku on her well-deserved recognition.
